Feds Funding Stem Cell Research in the Hundreds of Millions in 2005

I just checked the NIH site to see the funding levels for stem cell research. Here are the actual numbers for fiscal year 2005: Human embryonic, $40 million; non human embryonic, $97 million; Human, non embryonic, $199 million; and, non human, non embryonic, $273 million.

I'm glad to see that embryonic stem cell research is considerably lower than non-embryonic, whether human or non-human. However, because of the state of the technology involved, I have to wonder whether or not the larger non-human research funding is because of the early stage of much of the research, being pre-human application. It's possible that there will be an expansion of human ES cell research funding as the currently funded projects pick up steam and stimulate other studies. I do at least hope the NIH is responding in part to the high ratio of successful non-embryonic stem cell studies to embryonic studies.
