Scripps Howard Refuses to Permit Fumento to Tell the Truth About Adult Stem Cells
Yesterday, I linked an article written by Michael Fumento, which noted that a potential cure for juvenile diabetes using adult stem cells is not being funded by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, even though the technique cured mice with late stage disease.
Fumento wanted to follow up with a "Part 2" commentary. But, it appears that somebody doesn't want this truth widely disseminated. According to Fumento, his syndicate, Scripps Howard refused to publish the article, based on it allegedly being a "diatribe." What? Fumento's tone is utterly reasonable. The facts about which he opines are indisputable. Indeed, SCIENCE DID publish the study demonstrating that adult spleen stem cells completely cured mice with late stage juv. diabetes. Despite this amazing success, the JDRF DID refuse to fund human trials. Finally, the JDRF DID fund Proposition 71, which created a right to therapeutic cloning, to the tune of about $2 million. Yet, even IF that technology EVER becomes an effective treatment for juv. diabetes, it is at least a decade or more away.
This raises an important question: Is the JDRF most interested in finding a cure for juvenile diabetes or in promoting embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic human cloning? Surely, this is a topic worthy of being explored by a knowledgeable pundit. And if so, why the censorship?

This story just went from bad to worst. It wasn't enough that an organization committed to treating juvenile diabetes completely ignores a very promising, fruitful area of research. Now a commentator who points out this fact gets the cold shoulder from a syndicate.
"You can't SAY that" doesn't strike me as a satisfying response to Fumento's follow-up commentary--particularly given the factual basis for his article. Fumento is on to something now, and I hope he continues to discuss this.
I spoke to Michael, and he is not backing off. This is just one reason why so many people are unaware of all of the facts in the debates over biotech. Thanks. WJS

I thought it important to note here that although spleen cells are believed to be the source of the regenerated insulin producing islet cells in Dr. Faustman's experiments, NO TRANSPLANT or IMMUNOSUPPRESSANT DRUGS SHOULD BE REQUIRED!
Dr. Faustman's original goal was to eliminate or halt the autoimmune disease witihout the dependency on toxic immune suppression. In this process, she discovered that once the autoimmunity was stopped, healthy new insulin producing islet cells "regenerated" in the pancreases of the mice thus, curing diabetes permanently.
She took it a step further and wanted to find out where and how this 'regeneration' could happen, so she looked to the spleen. She demonstrated and published in the journal "Science" that spleen cells give rise to insulin producing islet cells curing diabetes. Her most recent publication in the online journal of "Science" explains the possible involvement of the spleen in regeneration very well.
In a nutshell....if you get rid of the autoimmune attack with a safe treatment (no toxic immune suppressants) and you have a spleen...regeneration from a diseased state can occur...curing the diabetes permanently. This is what the human trial is all about. No spleen cell transplants needed!
