Schiavo an Issue of Human Rights, not "Faith versus Science"

Fox News published this article under a misleading headline, e.g., that the Schiavo case is about "faith versus science." The article itself is fine, as far as it goes, but the headline writer got it all wrong. Schiavo is about the fundamental right to life of a profoundly disabled woman. It is a case where the judicial branch has been obsessive about process and dismissive of simple justice. It also may be a strong indication that the hegemony of the "bioethical consensus" reached among those within the Bioethics Establishment, is (hopefully) coming to an end.

Earlier today (Sunday) Fox had a Democratic spokesperson who is so angry about the fact that the feds are getting involved in the Shiavo case. He is outraged because he and his family went through this. It sounded like family members were at each other's throats and someone perhaps got starved and dehydrated to death. I can see why people like him might be made. Since the Cruzan case this has all been Okey Dokey. That is where the real damage was done. This case shows how far bioethicists and lawyers have gone without any real knowledge by the public, save those who have lived through it and either liked the freedom to make someone die or hated it. Am I off base?
